Presidents Weekly Report (22nd April 2024)

A busy weekend as our Rugby season draws to a close and the presentation dinners and Cup Finals start to build.  But first a big thank you and an apology.  As President I have had a tremendous two years visiting the many, many of the clubs in our County.  My thanks for the wonderful hospitality I received at every single visit.  I also apologise for those Clubs which I was not able to visit or dinners I could not attend.  This weekend was busy.

19th April: Event:  Presentation Dinner to the Champions of the North-West Colts League

Caldy Senior Colts won all but one fixture this season and had a spectacular playing flair.  On Friday Evening I had the privilege of presenting the League cup to them.  Attached is are photograph of the Teams Captain; Matt Wilson with JJ Dickinson, Caldy 1st Team Captain presenting Matt with the incredibly well earned Cup.  The team all assembled on the club steps to fully enjoy the occasion with coaches Mark Wilson, Steve Bishop & Rich Wiggins.

Saturday: Caldy vs Ealing Trailfinders.        Result:  Caldy 18  : TrailFinders 49

Photo: Ealing Forwards victorious & Caldy’s Catch-Drive-Score

This was a top of the table team having a tremendous season visiting Caldy, having beaten them this season but lost this time last year here at Caldy.  The game fired from the start with Caldy opening the scoring and quickly missing a golden opportunity to score the first try, the ball being fumbled with the line beckoning.  That was an opportunity missed and from then on; Ealing took a grip.  The bulk of the forwards began the inevitable grind against a brave Caldy.

By half time the lead was firmly established with Ealing devastating in open play.

Caldy made a good comeback late in the second half.  Attached is a big Catch-Drive-Score view of the late Caldy try but not enough to earn any bonus points on this occasion.

Sunday: Cheshire RFU U12’s Rugby Festival          Venue: Caldy RFC

Photo: Chester Rhinos & Lions

The U12 competition is back again.  The end of season finally for the youngsters who all have enjoyed a season of 12 aside rugby.  The ‘waterfall’ competition doesn’t drive to have finals from winners but more the opportunity for each team to play each other.  Teams from Birkenhead Park, Liverpool Collegiate, Anselmians, Wirral, Hoylake, Wilmslow, Chester & Caldy entering one or two squads in the competition.  This is always the beginning of massive changes in the skills players are learning and the differences in height and weight of individuals start to accelerate.

Many parents and players were taking part and the referees came from the lads clubs.  Well done to Tim Kilpatrick & Sally for a tremendous bit of organisation.

The last match was between two very good Chester Teams; the Rhinos & the Lions.  On the day there was a tremendous skill level but if I could identify some great driving, running and ball skills, Adman from Chester Rhinos and the pace of Teddy Kyriakos of Caldy Black did stand out.
