CHESHIRE RFU – ENGLAND RUGBY DEVELOPING PLAYER PROGRAMME (ERDPP)

As the women’s and girls’ game continues to grow the RFU took the decision in 2021 to start girls’ ERDPP programmes for the U16 dual age band in season 22/23 with counties delivering the programme.

The Purpose of the ERDPP (England Rugby Developing Player Programme) is to support the development of a broad base of players within Cheshire, with a focus on skill development and acquisition, game understanding and the physical components that help a player unlock their potential. It provides further opportunities to improve core skills and game understanding. The programme is intended to complement and enhance a player’s current rugby provision, be that through club or school, and give access to high-quality core skill development sessions run by ERDPP coaches.

The general commitment to the programme will be:

1) One (possibly two) assessment (s).

2) 12 rugby focussed sessions throughout the season, on Fridays.

3) Off field focussed sessions throughout the season, on Mondays.

4) Three playing opportunities – one per month in January, February, and March.

Whilst the programme is selective according to rugby ability, we also assess the players’ maturity and readiness to benefit from the course contents, as well as their skill level.

There are no set criteria to define what a player must be capable of to be selected by the ERDPP, because everyone is different. We are looking for players that have that MAGIC, which stands for Mindset, Athletical Potential, Game sense, Individual Skills and Communication.

Below is a summary of what they all mean to us:

Mindset: Courage, confidence, attitude, coachability, ambition, team player.

Athletic Potential: Work rate, physicality, strength, speed, endurance, agility, balance, co-ordination.

Game sense: Decision making, positional awareness, behaviour at the breakdown, understanding, problem solving, creative thinking.

Individual Skills: Catch, pass, carry, ruck, kick, tackle, position specific.

Communication: Clear, concise, constructive, listening skills, utilised in both attack and defence.

We use these criteria to guide selection decisions, and if a player excels in any of these areas, we will consider them for potential inclusion in the ERDPP.

PLAYERS ATTENDING CHESHIRE ERDPP ASSESSMENT DAYS MUST MEET ONE OF THE THREE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:

  1. Attend a school in Cheshire
  1. Play club rugby for a club in Cheshire
  1. Live (or be born) in Cheshire
