The 5th Cheshire Presidents Volunteer Awards Presentation Dinner was held at Bowdon RUFC on Tuesday 30th April 2019. Nominations had been made via the Mitsubishi Motors Volunteer of the Year Programme, by rugby clubs across Cheshire identifying and recognising the efforts and commitment of volunteers. In total there were 85 nominations from 31 clubs – a fantastic performance. The number of nominations has increased every year for the last 5 years.
Certificates from the RFU were presented to every nominee by Richard Haslehurst, the Cheshire RFU President, and Matthew Ambrose the Operations Director at Gallaghers Mitsubishi.
Nominations were also grouped into 12 categories. Richard Halsehurst, President of Cheshire RFU led the judging in each category to select a recipient for a Blue Plaque award, and presented them on the night.
“With 85 nominations, to select the nominees for the 12 categories for the Blue Plaque was no easy task due to the high quality of the proposals. Presenting the Blue Plagues to the nominees in front of 215 people from 25 clubs has been the highlight of my first year as President. I was truly honoured and humbled to do so. A hugely successful evening was enjoyed by all.”
A final part of the formalities was for 2 people to be selected by Mitsubishi to be invited to a National Black-Tie Volunteers Dinner at Twickenham in September, where 3 people will receive a Mitsubishi vehicle for a year. Stephen Lloyd of Christleton, and Brian Elkerton of Prenton were the lucky recipients, and we wish them well in September.
Matthew Ambrose commented ‘Having been involved with this initiative over the last 3 years, it amazing to see how it has grown and Tuesday’s dinner was a really fantastic event to be part of. The time and dedication that the nominees put into their clubs is truly inspirational. Having been lucky enough to accompany the winners to the Twickenham dinners, I can also say that everyone at the RFU also is truly humbled by the work that they put into the game’.
The awards evening was a lively affair attended by 215 people from 25 clubs. A lot of camaraderie was shown within the rugby fraternity with the efforts of all volunteers being appropriately recognised and celebrated.
