Last Saturday June 16th, saw the first ever Coaching Conference held in Cheshire at Chester Rugby Club.Where 75 coaches from the county’s clubs at Chester Rugby Club watched top class coaches delivering workshops and practical coaching sessions with the support of Sale Sharks U15 Development players.
Former England hooker Phil Greening brought coaches up to date on preparing for contact and Great Britain Rugby League’s Martin Gleeson covered a session on footwork at contact for defence and attack. Gordon Reay, a former professional rowing coach gave his take on coaching philosophy, while former Saracens and Sale Sharks hooker Matt Cairns brought everyone up to speed on scrum setup. Warren Spragg, from Sale Sharks Academy and Phil Kearns RFU Coach Development Officer, added advice on game changers.
Feedback from coaches was that they found the conference, which was largely funded by the Cheshire CB, informative and interesting, many saying that they would take what they had learned back to their clubs to inform their coaching and that of others.
Said Community Rugby Coach, Simon Verbickas: “Everyone thoroughly enjoyed this inaugural conference and got a lot out of it. Hopefully, others will follow as the coaches certainly had an appetite for more and those delivering were fantastic and took everyone outside their normal coaching environment.”
