During the 2015/16 season, Sale Sharks invited all the young players from the Developing Player Programme onto the pitch to have an age group picture as a celebration of the players achievements.

The U13 age group – both players and coaches – were given complimentary tickets to attend the Sale Sharks v London Irish match in January and invited onto the pitch at half-time for the picture.  The U14 group took part in the same experience at the Sale Sharks v Exeter match in February.

DPP U14s 2015-2016

The Sale Sharks Academy Manager, Brendan Thomas, has given us an overview of how the pathway works.

The Sale Sharks Academy Developing Player Programme (DPP) is the entry level to the player pathway for all players, from all backgrounds across the region, which covers Lancashire & Cheshire. There are approximately 500 players developing across the region at three age groups from U13 – U15. The emphasis of the programme is on longitudinal development, with increased numbers & a focus on core skills & game sense. A small number of players will progress through the DPP into our Academy Sharks Development Group (SDG) at U15 whilst everyone else involved in the programme continue to develop playing for their clubs, schools & Counties and are no doubt better players for the experience. The Academy invest heavily into this programme because of its obvious benefits. However, the delivery of the programme at the six sites involves a network of volunteer coaches/managers & administrators who do a great job. The programme values it’s staff & in conjunction with the RFU they are provided with CPD events to help them develop as coaches.

Sale Sharks would like to wish all the young players the best of luck in their rugby journey – a journey through which enjoyment is central.  Sale Sharks also has a huge thanks to the coaches and volunteers from across Cheshire and Lancashire that make the programme the success it is.
