Cheshire women – news item

Under the guidance of head coach Craig Hamilton, alongside assistant coaches Lorenzo Mansutti and Paul O’Keefe, the squad for Cheshire’s 2015 campaign is shaping up nicely.  33 women have been involved to date and this year’s Captain and Vice-Captain have been selected.  The captain will be Amy Hopper of Birkenhead Park Panthers.  “Hopps” started playing rugby for Leeds University as her New Year’s resolution was to join a sports team and she ended up loving rugby!  Amy joined Birkenhead Park, however work took her to Lincolnshire where she played County rugby for NLD as flanker. Now she back in Cheshire and is looking forward to representing Cheshire as captain.  This year’s Vice-Captain is Rachel ‘Phil’ Phillips.  Her rugby career began seven years ago when she joined Northwich ladies where she was soon affectionately re-named Phil.  This is her second season with Cheshire and she is looking forward to the responsibility of Vice this season with a great bunch of girls by her side!

Cheshire will be playing 3 matches:

Cheshire vs Northumberland, Chester RUFC, 1pm

Cumbria vs Cheshire, Carlisle RUFC, 1pm

Durham vs Cheshire, Darlington Mowden Park, 12:30

Match reports

Cheshire A 31 points Yorkshire A 14 points.

Cheshire B 47 points Yorkshire B 14 points

Matches played at Bowden RFC on Sunday April 5th.

Cheshire A 59 points Kent A 14 points

Cheshire B 44 points Kent B 28 points

Matches played at Lymm RFC on Tuesday April 7th.

Cheshire completed their season with emphatic A and B wins against strong opposition from Yorkshire and Kent. The wins were based on excellent possession from the forwards and the backs playing open and exciting rugby. The emphasis at 15 level is very much development and 35 boys were given the opportunity to play for the A team which reflects the depth of talent that we have in the county. The coaching team encouraged the boys to play rugby with the ball in hand and to enjoy the running game that this would create. Gus Warr, Ciaron Booth, Harry Craven and Harry Wilkinson showed excellent leadership qualities during the season and we wish all the boys success at 16 level next year.

Thanks go to lead coach Hugo Corbett and to coaches Ben Coulbeck, Noel Speed, Ryan Acton and Scott Meakin for their commitment to making the season so successful.

Our thanks also go to Bowden RFC and Lymm RFC for allowing us to use their excellent facilities again.
